Tell us a bit about yourself I’ve written creatively since forever, it seems. Poems, short stories, novels, reviews, essays, even the odd letter to the editor. My day job as a technical writer for various levels of government, was the labor I did for a living so that in my free time I could indulge in my labor of love, writing fiction. How do you find time to write? I was lucky to be able to retire early, and now that the kids are grown, my very indulgent husband works on his building projects, allowing me many hours at various times throughout the day to work on my writing projects. I’ve also been known to scribble plot ideas and snippets on napkins and paper placemats in restaurants. :) What’s your publishing tips? I’m probably echoing this, but don’t let rejection stop you from writing and continuing to hone your craft. Edit that novel, then re-edit. Find a list of common writing errors and unnecessary words and weed them out, one by one. I managed to reduce the word count of my latest novel from 140,000 words to under 100,000. It was tough--I loved many of those words-- but it is possible. Any promotional and marketing tips? One thing I hear over and over is to make connections with others, not just by promoting yourself and your book on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites, but by making your presence known about other interests, travels, family, or pets. Tell us about your recent book. Fortune’s Folly is what I call Historical Women’s Fiction, with several spicy love scenes. Log line: Her path was straight and narrow and right. Until disaster struck. Blurb: In 1867, Eden Fitzgerald marries, not for love or money, but to persuade her influential in-laws to obtain her father’s release from a contrived prison sentence. Cleverly evading those who believe she, like her father, is a smuggler and Fenian collaborator, Eden does what she can, what she must to achieve her goal. When legal methods are exhausted, she dons a mask, carries a pistol and, using her wiles, wits, even her seductive beauty, robs wealthy citizens to amass enough money to arrange her father’s escape. Her life grows ever more complicated by the lustful attentions of several men who profess to love her, and the one man she loves but dares not trust. As her crimes worsen, culminating in what may be treason, and her enemies grow more dangerous and determined to apprehend her, she must run for her own freedom. Excerpt: Jack Carver’s bearded face appeared when he brought the flame to the stub of his cigar. Eden clenched her teeth. Was this her moment of truth? His gaze shifted and he stiffened, tossed the match, stomped it out. “Anyone following you?” Muffled footfalls now sounded an irregular pace:three steps, pause, three steps, pause. She whispered, “Yes.” “Meet me tomorrow at this address.” He gave her a scrap of paper. She crumpled it into her reticule, and when she looked up, he was gone. Moment of truth averted. She released her breath and moved to the right as Flynn had instructed. With skirts bunched over one arm, she advanced until faint lights materialized at the end of the lane. She stepped into a puddle. Hopefully rain. The footsteps began again, the stealthy gait of a hunter. Had she dodged one bad fate for another? She darted across the lane and flattened herself against the wall of a building, slid along its rough length and edged into a recessed doorway. A hand covered her mouth, an arm pulled her backward through a door that had opened without sound and closed the same way. A key turned in the lock. Unable to see anything, her heart thundering, she dug her nails into her assailant’s hand and bit at his fingers. Tell us a bit about yourself Elizabeth is a mom, a wife, and the caretaker of far too many pets, all of whom her children swore they'd take care of. But they went off to college leaving fur babies in their place. She is a multi-published author of women's fiction and romance. She is a contributor for the Really Real Housewives of America blog, a great spot to find cheats for all things home related. She is also an admin for the Insecure Writer's Support Group. How do you find time to write? I use Novlr, an online writing program. With it, I can access my files from any computer or my phone. That way, whenever I have a spare minute, I can get words on the page. What’s your publishing tips? Never give up. If you love writing, write. I’ve seen a lot of talented writers quit because they think they have to get a big publishing contract and can’t. There is more than one path to bookshelves- use whatever works for you. Any promotional and marketing tips? I am horrible at marketing. A wise professor once told me to get advice from people who have succeeded in the job you’re attempting. That’s not me. Marketing for me is a crapshoot. Blogs, social media, newsletter…which reminds me…I forgot to send out a newsletter about my new book. Here’s a tip: make a to do list and consult it often. I should have done that… Tell us about your recent book. The short blurb: Sarah Andrews returns to Dodd, Indiana to heal a broken heart. She’s a topnotch attorney who wins in the courtroom, but she’s a failure at love. First day home, she runs into Rich Cooper, her first love and her first/worst heartache. She begins to regret moving back until she learns that Rich is embroiled in a custody battle for his two girls and needs her help. Even Sarah, who’s grown to distrust love in all forms, can’t help but be moved by Rich’s obvious love for his daughters. He needs her and having him at her mercy for once, is a position Sarah could get used to. The Official Blurb: Sarah Andrews is one smart cookie. She’s a top-notch attorney, educated at Stanford and freshly fired from one the best legal firms in Indiana. Her love/win record is 0-3 and as she approaches her thirtieth birthday, she decides she needs a quiet, safe place to regroup. She decides to go home to Dodd. But Dodd, Indiana is far from safe once she comes face-to-face with Richland Conrad Cooper. Rich and Sarah go way back to high school. Rich was teen-girl kryptonite—athletic, charming…persuasive—and Sarah was not immune. She fell hard, certain she'd found true love. But it turned out to be nothing more than the first of her love tries and fails. She thought time had shored up her defenses, but one look at Rich makes her heart do flip flops. It's like the moment where unrequited love gets a do-over, the only problem is...Rich doesn't remember who the hell she is. That hurt, and no matter how hard Rich tries to make up for that initial faux pas, Sarah won’t forget. She has learned—if a guy steals your heart, breaking his is quid pro quo. Only when Rich is served with a custody challenge of his two daughters does Sarah call a truce. Working together, Rich can’t help but totally fall for her. She’s cold and rude, forcefully pointing out their differences and his flaws every chance she gets. But the heart wants what the heart wants, so Rich tries even harder to convince her she isn’t meant for any other guy, but him. |
